Levi coffin (1798-1877)
Levi Coffin was referred to as the president of the UGRR. He was only 15 when he started helping slaves escape through the UGRR. Levi Coffin was an American Quaker, abolitionist, and businessman. Coffin was
deeply involved in the Underground Railroad in Indiana and Ohio and his home is often was called "Grand Central Station of the Underground Railroad". He became a school teacher and tought many slaves how to read and write. In 1821 Coffin tried to start a school for slaves but slave owners thought it would take away from work time. Him and his wife dedicated everything to helping slaves escape to freedom. They believed slaves should be just as equal as everyone else. Their home was a safe house in the UGRR where they provided shelter and food for 3,000 of slaves in there life time. Every penny they made went back to help slaves.
